West Ham 2-3 Southampton: Match Report

Southampton announced themselves as genuine promotion contenders with a gutsy 3-2 win at the London Stadium, ending West Ham’s nine-match unbeaten run and leaving the pre-season favourites looking over their shoulders.
It took the visitors less than two minutes to silence the home crowd. Leo Scienza wriggled into the box and forced a sharp save from Mads Hermansen, only for Kuryu Matsuki to poke home the rebound. James Bree made it two not long after, crashing a half-volley into the roof of the net after Hermansen spilled a cross. West Ham, still adjusting to life in the Championship after last season’s relegation, looked stunned.
Kyle Walker-Peters, facing his old club, hauled them back into it with a thunderous strike from the edge of the area. For a moment it felt like the Hammers might seize control. Instead they handed Southampton a soft third just before the break. Hermansen saved again from Scienza and Lewis Dobbin was left with the simplest of finishes for his first Saints goal.
The second half was a different story. West Ham threw everything forward. Max Kilman rattled the bar, Arne Engels was denied by Daniel Peretz’s legs, and Dobbin himself clipped the woodwork at the other end. Still Southampton held firm. Tomas Soucek’s late curler from distance made it 3-2 and set up a frantic finish, but Peretz produced one final brilliant save to keep out Valentin Castellanos’ header and seal the points.
By the end large sections of the home support had already left. Those who stayed made their feelings clear. For Southampton the result felt significant – a statement win on the road that moves them to within two points of the top two and proves they belong in the conversation.
