Villarreal 0-6 PSG: Fabián Ruiz Brace as Paris Set Champions League Record

Paris Saint-Germain produced a ruthless display of attacking excellence to thrash Villarreal 6-0 at Estadio de la Cerámica, setting a Champions League record by scoring four goals in the opening 17 minutes and extending their perfect start to the league phase under Luis Enrique.

The defending European champions, already in scintillating form after heavy wins over Slavia Prague, Manchester City and Barcelona earlier in the campaign, needed barely a quarter of an hour to reduce the hosts to a state of total disarray. João Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute, reacting quickest after a corner and finishing from close range. Three minutes later Désiré Doué doubled the lead, capitalising on a poor clearance from Péter Gulácsi after Maghnes Akliouche had intercepted. Within 60 seconds Senny Mayulu made it 3-0, driving a rising shot into the top corner after another turnover, and Fabián Ruiz completed the early onslaught on 16 minutes, arrowing a low finish past Gulácsi following Akliouche’s second assist of the night. The four goals in 16 minutes and two seconds represented the fastest four-goal start in the competition’s history.

Villarreal, managed by Iñigo Pérez, had entered the match with ambition but found themselves completely overrun by the intensity of PSG’s pressing and the quality of their transitions. The second half brought no respite. Five minutes after the restart Ruiz latched on to a Vitinha free-kick and completed his brace with a composed finish, making it 5-0. Substitute David Boly, a 17-year-old making his Champions League debut after replacing Achraf Hakimi, added a sixth in the 78th minute, finishing calmly from João Neves’ pass. Villarreal managed occasional efforts through Pape Gueye and Georges Mikautadze, yet goalkeeper Matvey Safonov was rarely tested.

By full-time PSG had registered 22 shots to Villarreal’s 14, enjoyed 71 per cent possession and recorded an expected-goals total of around 2.7 to the hosts’ 0.7. The result left Luis Enrique’s side on 12 points from four matches, three points clear at the top of the league-phase table and unbeaten in 14 Champions League games. For Villarreal the evening represented a sobering reminder of the gap that still separates them from Europe’s elite, their defensive organisation crumbling under sustained pressure and their hopes of a competitive showing extinguished long before half-time.
