Viking 3-3 Bayern Munich: Haugen’s late header stuns 10-man Bayern Munich

Herman Haugen headed home a 90th-minute equaliser to complete a sensational night for Norwegian underdogs Viking as they held ten-man Bayern Munich to a thrilling 3-3 Champions League draw in Stavanger.

The home side, who had lost their opening league-phase game, stunned the six-time European champions with a dream start and twice led by two goals before Harry Kane’s double and a Luis Díaz strike turned the contest on its head. Yet Michael Olise’s needless red card shifted the momentum once more, and Viking’s tireless captain Zlatko Tripić created the late drama that sparked wild celebrations at Lyse Arena.

Barely 70 seconds had elapsed when Tripić swung in a corner and Gianni Stensness rose highest to plant a firm header past Jonas Urbig. Bayern, still reeling from an early concession in their previous league outing, struggled to impose themselves on the artificial surface as Viking pressed high and broke with purpose. Seven minutes before the interval the hosts doubled their advantage. Erik Botheim released Peter Christiansen on a swift counter, the striker shrugging off Nathaniel Brown before sliding a composed finish into the bottom corner.

Vincent Kompany made three changes at the break and Bayern responded immediately. A VAR-reviewed foul on Konrad Laimer inside the area presented Kane with a penalty that the England captain converted clinically in the 54th minute. Six minutes later Kane rose to meet Joshua Kimmich’s delivery from a short corner routine and headed home to level the scores, extending his remarkable run to nine consecutive Champions League matches with a goal.

The visitors completed the turnaround in the 71st minute. Kane clipped a precise ball into the path of Laimer, whose low cross was finished from close range by Díaz. Bayern looked set for victory until Olise, already booked, picked up a second yellow seconds later for throwing the ball into Tripić’s face. Reduced to ten men, the German side could not close the game out.

Viking poured forward and, with the clock showing 90 minutes, Tripić again produced the decisive moment, dancing down the left and floating a cross to the far post. Substitute Haugen climbed above Alphonso Davies and powered a header past Urbig to secure a point that will live long in the memory of Norwegian football.

Kane’s influence was immense and Bayern generated far more expected goals, yet the visitors were left to rue their slow start and Olise’s moment of madness. For Viking the draw represents a famous night and a first point of the league phase, achieved through courage, organisation and clinical finishing when it mattered most. Bayern host Arsenal next in the competition, while the Norwegian champions will savour a result few outside Stavanger believed possible.
