Southampton 1-0 Portsmouth: Ten-Man Saints Claim First Derby Win in 21 Years

James Bree’s composed first-half finish proved enough for ten-man Southampton to claim a first league win over Portsmouth in 21 years and secure the bragging rights in a tense south-coast derby at St Mary’s.

The right-back steered home after 20 minutes following a superb clipped pass from Finn Azaz that exposed Jayden Meghoma, sending the home crowd into delirium and giving Tonda Eckert victory in his first derby as head coach. The result came at the end of a dramatic week for the German, who had just escaped an immediate ban for his role in the Spygate affair and was free to take his place on the touchline.

Southampton’s joy was tempered just before the break when Cameron Bragg, a lifelong Saints supporter, received a second yellow card for tugging back Ebou Adams after being dispossessed. The dismissal left the hosts with ten men for the entire second half, yet they defended with remarkable resolve.

Portsmouth, under John Mousinho, poured forward after the interval and created a series of half-chances, but clear openings proved elusive. Colby Bishop headed straight at Daniel Peretz from a free-kick, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen fired narrowly wide, and substitutes Adrian Segecic and Zak Swanson both saw efforts blocked or drift past the post. Keven Schlotterbeck and Jack Stephens threw themselves into challenges, while Peretz remained largely untroubled as the visitors’ pressure lacked a clinical edge.

Southampton still carried a threat on the break. Leo Scienza was denied by Nicolas Schmid in a one-on-one early in the second half after another precise Azaz through-ball, and the midfielder later saw a deflected shot held by the Portsmouth goalkeeper. Eckert’s side gradually shut up shop, introducing Caspar Jander and others to protect the lead, and successfully ran down the clock amid five minutes of stoppage time.

The win lifts Southampton into the top half of the Championship table and ends a long wait for derby success, while Portsmouth remain without a league victory over their rivals since 2005. For Eckert it was the perfect response to a turbulent week; for Mousinho’s men, frustration at failing to capitalise on their numerical advantage in a contest that never lacked intensity.
