Championship Round-Up: West Ham Collapse at Home as Wolves Cruise Past Cardiff

West Ham 1-3 West Brom: Baggies expose home frailties
West Ham United’s season under Nuno Espírito Santo took another heavy blow as they crumbled 1-3 at home to West Bromwich Albion. Felix Horn Myhre opened the scoring for the visitors with a clinical finish after a swift counter-attack. Jarrod Bowen’s deflected effort briefly restored parity before half-time, but Jimmy-Jay Morgan restored West Brom’s lead shortly after the restart and Callum Styles sealed the points with a well-struck effort.
The result left West Ham dropping to eighth while West Brom climbed into the top four. Home fans made their feelings clear, joining visiting supporters in choruses aimed at the manager as the final whistle approached.
Wolves 3-0 Cardiff City: Headers seal comfortable win
Across the Midlands, Wolves were far more clinical. Fer López headed them in front inside ten minutes from Hugo Bueno’s delivery, and Adam Armstrong doubled the lead five minutes later with another header. Ladislav Krejčí completed the set with a third headed goal from a Kieran Trippier corner just before the hour mark.
The clean sheet and three points extended Wolves’ unbeaten run to four matches and lifted them into third place. Cardiff, whose three-match unbeaten streak ended, offered little resistance and remain mid-table.
Promotion race stays tight at the top
Leaders Middlesbrough made light work of Charlton Athletic, winning 3-0 thanks in part to a Will Lankshear brace. Swansea City responded to their midweek setback with a ruthless 4-0 thrashing of Blackburn Rovers, while Southampton dismantled Queens Park Rangers 4-1 at St Mary’s. Millwall also hit four, beating Derby County 4-1, and Birmingham City continued their solid form with a 3-1 win at Lincoln City.
Late drama and other results
There were late twists too. Bristol City staged a dramatic comeback at Bolton Wanderers, winning 3-2 thanks to Scott Twine’s stoppage-time winner. Norwich City produced one of the turnarounds of the day, recovering from 2-0 down to beat Watford 3-2. Stoke City kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory over Preston North End, while Burnley and Portsmouth shared a goalless draw in Fabio Celestini’s first game in charge of the Clarets. Sheffield United had edged Wrexham 1-0 the previous evening.
What the results mean
The results leave Middlesbrough still setting the pace, with Swansea and Wolves close behind. West Brom’s away win keeps them firmly in the mix for automatic promotion, while West Ham’s home struggles continue to raise questions about their ability to mount a sustained challenge. Cardiff, meanwhile, must regroup quickly after a chastening afternoon at Molineux.
