Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa: Raphinha Brace and Yamal Strike End Villa’s Perfect Start

Barcelona ended Aston Villa’s perfect start to the Champions League league phase with a controlled 3-0 victory at the Spotify Camp Nou, where Lamine Yamal’s early strike and a second-half brace from Raphinha restored Hansi Flick’s side to second place in the standings after their recent defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The contest was decided by a combination of clinical finishing and self-inflicted damage. In the seventh minute, as Villa attempted to play out from the back in the pouring rain, João Gomes’s blind pass across his own box fell straight to Yamal, who curled a composed finish into the far corner beyond Zion Suzuki. The goal made the teenager the highest-scoring under-20 player in Champions League history with 14 goals, surpassing Kylian Mbappé’s previous mark. Villa refused to collapse. Matty Cash and Victor Lindelöf both had efforts deflected behind, while Johan Manzambi tested Joan Garcia, and the visitors created enough threat to keep the first half competitive despite trailing.

Barcelona tightened their grip after the interval. Seven minutes into the second half Fermín López fed Raphinha on the edge of the area; the Brazilian’s low shot deflected off Pau Torres and wrong-footed Suzuki to make it 2-0. Twelve minutes later João Cancelo produced a moment of quality on the left, beating John McGinn and delivering an outside-of-the-boot cross that allowed Raphinha to convert from close range for his second of the night and his 19th goal of the season. Leon Goretzka’s glancing header clipped the post as Villa pushed for a consolation, yet Barcelona comfortably protected their first European clean sheet since April 2025.

Possession finished 65-35 in the hosts’ favour, with Barcelona recording 16 shots to Villa’s nine and an expected-goals total of roughly 2.0 to 0.7. The result left both teams on nine points from four matches, Barcelona moving above Unai Emery’s side into second behind the still-perfect Paris Saint-Germain. For Villa the evening ended a three-game winning run in the competition and served as a reminder of the fine margins at this level; for Barcelona it marked a return to the controlled, high-intensity football that has characterised their season under Flick.
