Bayern Munich 2-2 Arsenal: Rice Rescues Late Draw in Munich

Declan Rice scored a superb late equaliser to earn Arsenal a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in a thrilling Champions League league-phase clash at the Allianz Arena, denying the hosts victory after Harry Kane had put them ahead from the penalty spot.

The England midfielder raced into the box in the 82nd minute to fire a clinical low finish beyond Manuel Neuer from an acute angle, capping a slick move involving Noni Madueke and substitute Viktor Gyokeres. It was a goal that rescued a point for Mikel Arteta’s side and extended their unbeaten start to the competition, even as it brought an end to Arsenal’s remarkable 14-game winning streak in the Champions League league phase or group stage – the second longest in the competition’s history.

Arsenal had taken the lead against the run of early pressure when Bukayo Saka was forced off with a suspected thigh injury after just 10 minutes. Eberechi Eze came on in his place and made an immediate impact. Midway through the first half the substitute latched on to a pinpoint through-ball from Martin Odegaard, raced clear and finished coolly past Neuer. An initial offside flag was overturned by VAR, sparking celebrations among the travelling Arsenal support.

Bayern’s response was swift and elegant. Harry Kane, the former Tottenham striker and leading Ballon d’Or contender, collected the ball deep in midfield and produced a sumptuous defence-splitting pass that sent Alphonso Davies clear. The Canadian international finished emphatically to restore parity before the interval.

The second half continued at a high tempo. Kane then completed the turnaround from the penalty spot after Jurrien Timber was penalised for handball when blocking the England captain’s shot. Kane sent David Raya the wrong way with a composed finish to the top corner, his 16th career goal against Arsenal.

Bayern pressed for a third but Arsenal’s defensive resolve held firm. The visitors grew into the game once more and, with time running out, produced a moment of quality that Kane himself might have admired. Madueke and Gyokeres combined neatly before Rice arrived to drill the ball home and spark wild celebrations in the away end.

The result left Arsenal seventh in the league-phase table with seven points from three matches, while Bayern sit 14th on five points. Both sides will feel the point is valuable in a fiercely competitive group, though Bayern will rue the late concession after creating the clearer chances. For Arsenal, the draw maintains their strong start under Arteta, even as concern grows over the fitness of Saka ahead of a busy schedule.
