Inter 3-4 Club Brugge: Tresoldi hat-trick stuns Inter in Champions League thriller

Club Brugge produced one of the shocks of the Champions League season as Nicolò Tresoldi’s brilliant hat-trick inspired a thrilling 4-3 victory over Inter Milan at San Siro.

The Belgian side, managed by Ivan Leko, came from behind twice and twice more after the break to leave Cristian Chivu’s Inter still searching for their first points in the league phase. Inter had lost their opening match 2-1 at Real Madrid and now sit near the foot of the 36-team table after a second successive defeat.

Tresoldi, the 22-year-old Italian-German forward, opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 30th minute after Hakan Çalhanoğlu fouled Carlos Forbs. The home side levelled just before the interval when Lautaro Martínez finished a neat move involving Marcus Thuram and Federico Dimarco.

Any hope that Inter would take control after the break was quickly extinguished. A misunderstanding between goalkeeper Josep Martínez and his defence allowed Forbs to play the ball through the keeper’s legs, leaving Tresoldi with the simplest of finishes to restore Club Brugge’s lead on 63 minutes. Eleven minutes later the striker completed his treble, reacting first to a parried shot from Forbs to make it 3-1.

Lautaro Martínez refused to accept defeat and pulled one back in the 81st minute, converting the rebound after Yann Sommer had saved Petar Sučić’s effort. Yet Club Brugge struck again on the counter-attack six minutes later, Romeo Vermant applying a composed finish after another Forbs through-ball.

Ange-Yoan Bonny gave the San Siro a final flicker of hope with a fine individual goal deep into stoppage time, cutting inside and curling a right-footed shot beyond Sommer, but Club Brugge held firm to secure a famous result. Inter created more than enough chances to win the game several times over, yet individual errors and clinical finishing from the visitors proved decisive.

The victory lifts Club Brugge into the top half of the league-phase standings while Inter remain without a point after two matches and face growing pressure ahead of their next home fixture against Shakhtar Donetsk.
