Mikel Arteta’s side had laboured through a frustrating opening hour against a compact and organised French outfit managed by Davide Ancelotti. Despite dominating possession, the Gunners struggled to find a decisive final ball, with the frontline of Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyökeres failing to click in a laboured first half. Lille even had the ball in the net early on, only for Ayase Ueda’s effort to be correctly ruled out for offside, while Berke Özer produced important saves to deny Eze and Bruno Guimarães.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 64th minute. Madueke slipped a pass into the feet of Jurriën Timber inside the area, and the Dutch defender showed the composure of a seasoned forward, controlling the ball before lofting a delicate finish over Özer and into the far corner. It was Timber’s first goal of the season and the signal for Arteta to unleash his big guns from the bench.
Within moments Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz were introduced, and the game changed completely. Saka, who had been feeling under the weather and was not deemed ready to start, made an immediate impact. Two minutes after the opener he received the ball on the right, drove forward and pulled it back for Eze, whose first-time strike – helped by a slight deflection – nestled in the bottom corner for his first goal of the campaign.
Four minutes later the third arrived in style. Ødegaard and Havertz combined neatly down the right before the German cut the ball back for Saka, who coolly rolled a left-footed finish past Özer. Three goals in seven minutes had turned a tight contest into a comfortable victory, extending Arsenal’s remarkable run of form in the competition’s league phase.
The result left Arsenal with two wins from two and six points, while Lille remain pointless after successive defeats. There was a nostalgic moment late on when Olivier Giroud, now 40, returned to the Emirates as a late substitute for the visitors, drawing warm applause from the home crowd on his first appearance back at the ground where he once starred.
Arteta later praised Saka’s contribution after the winger had shaken off illness to deliver a goal and an assist. “He wasn’t feeling that good yesterday and today… but he came on and made a huge impact and delivered with real quality,” the manager said. For Arsenal, the night ended in total control, their quality and depth once again proving too much when the moment demanded it.
