Man Utd 1-1 Tottenham: Solanke’s late header rescues draw for 10-man Spurs

Dominic Solanke’s stoppage-time header rescued a dramatic point for 10-man Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford as Manchester United were left to rue another frustrating afternoon that ended with boos ringing around the ground.
Bryan Mbeumo had looked set to hand United a much-needed victory when he broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, turning sharply on Matheus Cunha’s pass and guiding a low finish across Antonin Kinsky into the far corner in front of the Stretford End. The goal came against the run of play after Spurs had dominated large periods without converting a series of clear chances.
Solanke, captaining the visitors, was particularly culpable early on. He forced a fine third-minute save from Senne Lammens after the United goalkeeper’s misplaced pass was intercepted, then fired over from close range early in the second half. Mohammed Kudus also skewed a shot wide from Savio’s cut-back as Tottenham’s wastefulness threatened to define their afternoon.
United struggled to impose themselves, with home fans growing increasingly restless. Bruno Fernandes fired wide and Amad Diallo was denied on the break, while a Youri Tielemans effort was correctly ruled out for the ball having gone out of play. The hosts’ only real spark before the opener came from Cunha’s involvement, and when Mbeumo finally found the net it seemed the three points were theirs.
Worse followed for Spurs five minutes later. Substitute Rodrigo Bentancur, on the pitch for barely 12 minutes, reacted to a shove from Luke Shaw by initiating head-to-head contact. Referee Stuart Attwell showed an immediate red card for violent conduct, sparking a touchline melee involving players and staff from both sides. Shaw and Jan Paul van Hecke were booked as tempers boiled over.
With a numerical advantage and a one-goal lead, United should have closed the game out. Instead they invited pressure. Mbeumo almost settled the nerves when he burst clear, only for Kinsky to deny him. Then, in the second of eight added minutes, Sandro Tonali swung in a cross from the right. Solanke outmuscled Lisandro Martinez, glancing a header past a static Lammens into the bottom corner.
The equaliser lifted Tottenham off the foot of the table and gave them just their third point of the season. For United, it extended their winless league run and left manager Michael Carrick under further scrutiny after another performance that failed to convince. Both sides remain deep in the bottom half, with Spurs still searching for a first league win of the campaign.
