Arsenal 2-1 Leeds: Guimaraes seals comeback as Gunners go level with Man City

Riccardo Calafiori and substitute Bruno Guimarães struck in eight second-half minutes as Arsenal recovered from a sluggish display to beat previously unbeaten Leeds United and move level on points with leaders Manchester City.
James Justin’s well-taken finish had given Daniel Farke’s side a deserved lead early in the second half, but Mikel Arteta’s champions responded emphatically to claim a vital three points on their return from the international break.
Leeds punish sluggish start
Arsenal arrived at the Emirates still smarting from a 3-0 reverse at Brighton before the break and looked every bit a side still finding their rhythm. Leeds, organised and aggressive, controlled large periods of the first half and restricted the hosts to very few clear chances.
The visitors continued in the same vein after the interval. In the 55th minute Gabriel Gudmundsson delivered a low cross from the left that skipped beyond David Raya, allowing Justin to arrive at the far post and smash a right-footed shot into the top corner despite Gabriel Magalhães’ desperate attempt to clear on the line.
For a moment it felt as though Arsenal’s imperfect afternoon might turn into a full-blown crisis. Leeds had been the more dangerous side and looked capable of holding their advantage.
Gunners hit back immediately
The response was swift and clinical. Seven minutes later Ben White headed a cross back across the face of goal and Calafiori, arriving unmarked, finished from close range to restore parity.
Arteta immediately turned to his bench. Jurriën Timber, Viktor Gyökeres and Guimarães entered the fray. The Brazilian, signed in the summer, needed only a few minutes to make the decisive impact.
In the 70th minute neat interplay involving Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka ended with Declan Rice producing a clever back-heeled flick into the path of Guimarães. The midfielder took one touch and drove a low right-footed shot into the bottom corner for his first Emirates goal.
Arsenal close it out
The double blow knocked the wind out of Leeds. Although Farke’s side continued to compete and created the occasional late threat, Arsenal managed the remainder of the contest with greater authority. James Trafford produced a fine late save to deny Saka a third, but the points were safe.
The result ends Leeds’ impressive unbeaten start to the campaign and leaves them with nine points from six matches. Arsenal, meanwhile, climb to 15 points – level with Manchester City, who still have a game in hand.
It was far from a vintage performance from the champions, yet the character shown in the second-half fightback will please Arteta more than the aesthetic quality. Two goals in eight minutes transformed a potential banana skin into a statement of resilience as the title race begins to take shape.
