Coventry City 0-1 Fulham: Oscar Bobb scores late winner

Oscar Bobb produced a moment of pure quality to lift Fulham clear of the Premier League relegation zone with a hard-earned 1-0 victory at Coventry City.

The Norway international’s first league goal for the club arrived in the 80th minute at the Coventry Building Society Arena, ending what had threatened to become another frustrating afternoon for Alvaro Arbeloa’s side. Picking up the ball out wide after a corner, Bobb skipped past Jack Rudoni and Jay Dasilva before curling a precise left-footed shot into the far corner, beyond the dive of Carl Rushworth. It was only his second goal in all competitions since his £27 million January move from Manchester City, and it proved decisive.

Fulham had dominated possession throughout, controlling 64 per cent of the ball and looking the more composed side, yet clear-cut chances were scarce in a tight, low-scoring contest. Josh King came closest in the first half, driving forward and thumping a fierce effort against the post. Shortly before the interval, VAR extensively reviewed a potential penalty claim when Brandon Thomas-Asante appeared to pull Calvin Bassey’s shirt at a corner, only for the decision to go against the visitors after Bassey was deemed to have initiated contact by pushing the Coventry forward.

Frank Lampard’s side, still finding their feet in the top flight, struggled to generate meaningful pressure. Brief spells of possession in the Fulham half produced little to trouble Bernd Leno, and the hosts’ afternoon was further disrupted when the influential Bobby Thomas limped off just before the hour mark. Substitutions brought energy but no cutting edge as Coventry’s recent home form, which had included a 4-1 thrashing of Newcastle, came crashing back to earth.

The late winner secured Fulham’s first away victory in nine attempts, stretching back to February, and followed last weekend’s 1-0 home success against Hull City. Back-to-back wins have eased the early-season pressure on Arbeloa and lifted the Cottagers out of the bottom three. Coventry remain deep in trouble near the foot of the table, their lack of goal threat painfully exposed once more.

Bobb’s intervention ensured the points headed back to west London, a result that felt both deserved and long overdue for a Fulham team that had controlled large periods without reward until the Norwegian’s moment of magic.
