Fulham 1-1 Newcastle United: Muniz cancels out Murphy’s stunner in dramatic Craven Cottage draw

Craven Cottage witnessed a late flurry of drama as Fulham and Newcastle United shared the points in a 1-1 draw that left both sides with mixed feelings. Jacob Murphy’s spectacular 80th-minute strike looked set to deliver a precious away win for Matthias Jaissle’s men, only for Rodrigo Muniz to respond within three minutes and extend Fulham’s unbeaten run.
For long periods the game threatened to drift to a goalless stalemate. Fulham enjoyed the greater share of possession and created the more sustained pressure, with Oscar Bobb forcing Lukas Hornicek into an early save and Josh King later testing the Newcastle goalkeeper. Harvey Barnes twice came close for the visitors, denied on one occasion by a remarkable stop from Bernd Leno. Dan Burn thought he had broken the deadlock in the first half, but the goal was correctly ruled out for a foul by Yoane Wissa on Timothy Castagne.
The breakthrough finally arrived with ten minutes remaining. Murphy seized on a loose pass in the Fulham half, drove forward, cut inside Calvin Bassey and curled a superb left-footed effort from 25 yards into the top corner. It was a moment of individual quality that appeared to have decided the contest and offered Jaissle’s side a chance to ease the pressure after a difficult recent run.
Fulham’s response was immediate. César Palacios, who had earlier erred for the opening goal, worked the ball into the area. In a scramble inside the six-yard box, Muniz reacted quickest to force the ball past Hornicek and level the scores. It was the Brazilian’s first Premier League goal since August 2025 and sparked wild celebrations among the home support.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages. Lewis Hall was denied by Leno from close range, while Hornicek produced an outstanding stop to keep out a stinging effort from Ryan Sessegnon in stoppage time. The points were ultimately shared.
For Álvaro Arbeloa’s Fulham, the result extends their unbeaten sequence to four league matches and offers encouragement as they look to pull further clear of the bottom three. For Jaissle and Newcastle, it was a point gained but also an opportunity missed. A hard-fought away performance was undermined by the late concession, leaving the German still searching for greater consistency in his early months in charge. At Craven Cottage, resilience and a rapid response proved enough to deny Newcastle all three points.
