Conor Coady retires from professional football at 33

Former England centre-back Conor Coady has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33. The defender shared the news on Friday via Instagram, posting a farewell video with the simple caption: “A dream come true. Forever grateful, thank you.” Coady had been a free agent since the end of August 2026.

Coady began his career in Liverpool’s academy, where he played as a defensive midfielder and was often compared to Steven Gerrard. He made only two senior appearances for the Reds before loans to Sheffield United (2013/14) and a full season at Huddersfield Town in the Championship. His career took off after joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2015.

The arrival of manager Nuno Espírito Santo proved transformative. Nuno converted Coady into a centre-back in a back three and made him captain. Over seven years at Molineux, Coady became a club legend and a symbol of Wolves’ revival. He made 317 appearances (scoring seven goals), helped the side win promotion to the Premier League, finish seventh in consecutive seasons, and reach the Europa League quarter-finals in 2019/20. Later spells included a Premier League loan at Everton and a move to Leicester City in 2023.

His major honours came in the Championship: he captained Wolves to the title in 2017/18 and won a second promotion with Leicester in 2023/24. At youth level he lifted the European Under-17 Championship with England in 2010 and captained the side at the 2013 Under-20 World Cup.

Coady earned 10 senior England caps after making his debut in September 2020. He scored once, in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales at Wembley in October 2020. Under Gareth Southgate he was part of the squads that reached the final of Euro 2020 and competed at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Although primarily a squad player at both tournaments, he was widely praised for his leadership and influence in the dressing room.

The final chapter of his playing career took him to Wrexham in August 2025 and then on loan to Charlton Athletic. He made only six appearances for Wrexham before joining the Addicks in January 2026. His 503rd and final professional appearance came on 2 May 2026 in Charlton’s 3-1 Championship defeat to Swansea. In late August he mutually terminated his contract with Wrexham.

Immediately after retiring, Coady moved into media and coaching. He became co-host of the new weekly BBC Radio 5 Live podcast The Football Club alongside Mark Chapman and returned to Liverpool’s academy setup. Having previously worked with England’s Under-19 and Under-21 sides, he has been assisting Jay Spearing and Rob Page with Liverpool’s Under-21s since September while exploring opportunities for senior coaching roles.
