Vincent Kompany taken to hospital after collapsing at training ground

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital in Munich after collapsing at the club’s Säbener Straße training complex on Friday afternoon.

According to Bild, The 40-year-old Belgian was watching the club’s under-23 side train after the first-team session when he collapsed. An air ambulance helicopter (Christoph 1 from Klinikum Harlaching) was called to the site at around 15:54, and Kompany was later transported by ambulance to a Munich hospital. Reports indicate his condition is stable.

The incident comes after Kompany had been battling a viral infection for more than a week. The illness left him significantly weakened during Bayern’s 6-1 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig last Saturday. Although he delivered the team talk, he spent much of the match seated and had to lie down on a sofa in the coaching room at the Allianz Arena both at half-time and after the final whistle. The infection is understood to have aggravated old scar tissue, causing hip discomfort that made climbing stairs difficult.

Kompany missed training on Monday and Tuesday and was examined by the club’s medical staff, led by team internist Prof. Dr. Roland Schmidt. Assistant coach Aaron Danks handled media duties ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League home game against Arsenal, saying the priority was rest and that “getting Vince to rest is a challenge.”

Despite the setbacks, Kompany returned to the touchline for the 2-2 draw with Arsenal. After the match he told reporters: “As a coach, you want to do everything by yourself. I caught a pretty nasty virus last week. I didn’t listen to my body, and at some point my body told me: ‘Stop now, man!’ That was it. Now I’m feeling better, otherwise I wouldn’t be here.”

Bayern have not yet issued an official statement on Friday’s incident. The club face SC Freiburg away in the Bundesliga on Sunday, and it remains unclear whether Kompany will be available or if Danks and the rest of the coaching staff will take charge.

The former Manchester City and Belgium captain has been Bayern’s head coach since 2024. His health will be closely monitored in the coming days as the club seek clarity on the extent of any complications from the viral infection.
