Chelsea 5-1 Bournemouth: Henderson brace inspires Stamford Bridge thrashing

Jordan Henderson produced a moment of pure magic on his Stamford Bridge bow as Chelsea tore into Bournemouth with two goals inside the opening three minutes and never looked back in a free-flowing 5-1 Premier League thrashing.

The veteran midfielder, 36 and making his home debut after joining in the summer, opened the scoring with barely 64 seconds on the clock. Cole Palmer collected the ball near halfway and was allowed to surge forward unchallenged before laying it off for Henderson, who curled a first-time effort in off the far post. One minute later the lead was doubled. Henderson was involved again, this time feeding Morgan Rogers, whose curling strike from the edge of the area deflected off Thiago Silva and left Djordje Petrovic helpless.

Bournemouth, still searching for a first league win under Marco Rose, were already reeling. Chelsea’s high-tempo start continued after the break. Within 40 seconds of the restart Pedro Neto wriggled past Silva on the byline and pulled the ball back for João Pedro to smash home emphatically from 12 yards.

The visitors briefly threatened a response when Moisés Caicedo’s attempted clearance from a corner cannoned off Evanilson and into the net on 51 minutes, but any flicker of hope was extinguished. In the 67th minute Rogers released Pep Chavarría down the left and the full-back’s cross was turned in by Pedro for his second of the afternoon and fifth of the season, putting him level with Erling Haaland at the top of the scoring charts.

Henderson then provided the perfect postscript. With the home crowd already celebrating, Palmer stepped over a free-kick 30 yards out and the former Liverpool captain bent a sublime effort into the top corner to complete a remarkable personal brace.

Xabi Alonso’s side had scored five times from an expected goals total of just over one, underlining the quality of the finishing on a sunny October afternoon. Bournemouth, who had taken the lead in four of their previous five league games, were left with nothing to show for their efforts and remain winless. Chelsea climbed to fifth, the result providing a timely response to recent questions about their consistency after a three-game winless run before the international break.

The Blues were able to introduce substitutes including debutant Marco Palestra in the closing stages as the game wound down, the only blot a familiar set-piece concession that briefly interrupted their dominance. For Henderson it was a day to savour – two goals and an assist on his first appearance in front of the Stamford Bridge faithful, and a performance that will live long in the memory.
