Watford v Burnley: Team news, head-to-head and prediction

Watford and Burnley meet in a crucial championship basement battle at Vicarage Road on Saturday (15:00 BST), with both sides desperate for a change in fortunes after dismal starts to the 2025-26 season.
The Hornets sit 20th with eight points from eight games after losing four of their last five league matches, including a 1-0 defeat at Bristol City before the international break. Burnley prop up the table in 24th on just four points, still searching for a first league win of the campaign (D4 L4) and without a victory since February.
Alessio Dionisi’s Watford have shown flashes of promise but are hampered by a threadbare squad and injury issues, while Nicky Hayen’s Clarets face mounting pressure after a winless return from the Premier League. Both managers need a result to ease the growing scrutiny.
Team news
Watford continue to deal with a lengthy injury list that has left the squad propped up by academy players at times. Michail Antonio remains unavailable as he builds fitness after a broken leg sustained in a car crash following his September arrival. Left-back Marc Bola is still out with a hamstring injury suffered on the opening day, while midfielder Edoardo Bove is expected to miss out until November with a ligament problem.
Jordan Zemura (muscle), Jeremy Ngakia (thigh), Kwadwo Baah (thigh – doubt, expected back this month) and others have also been sidelined recently. Young forward Amin Nabizada has emerged as a key threat, scoring three goals in four home Championship games. Goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia is likely to start behind a defence that has struggled for clean sheets.
Burnley have their own absentees. Josh Cullen (ACL), Jordan Beyer (hamstring), Ashley Barnes, Jaydon Banel, Bashir Humphreys, Dastan Satpaev and others remain unavailable or outside the 25-man squad. Some players such as Banel and Cullen have been edging closer to a return after the break, offering hope of greater depth. Zeki Amdouni and Josh Laurent provide the main attacking threat for a side that has conceded 17 goals already – more than in their entire 46-game 2024-25 Championship campaign.
Head-to-head
Burnley hold the historical edge. In the last 24 meetings, the Clarets have won 11, Watford five, with eight draws. Watford have managed just three wins in their past 18 league encounters against Burnley (D7 L8) and only one in the last nine (D3 L5) – a 1-0 victory in August 2022.
Recent form favours the visitors too: Burnley won both meetings last season (2-1 away in April 2025 and 2-1 at home in December 2024). The Clarets are aiming for three successive league wins over the Hornets for the first time since a five-game run between 1998 and 2002.
At Vicarage Road, matches have often been tight and competitive, with both teams scoring in a high proportion of recent clashes.
Prediction
This is a genuine six-pointer at the wrong end of the table. Watford’s home form offers some encouragement – they have taken points more readily at Vicarage Road – and Nabizada’s scoring touch could prove decisive. Burnley’s inability to win, combined with defensive fragility (facing far more shots than last season), leaves them vulnerable on the road.
Hayen’s side will be desperate to end their drought, but Watford’s slight edge in recent home performances and the Clarets’ away struggles tip the balance. Expect a scrappy, low-scoring affair typical of two sides short on confidence.
Prediction: Watford 1-0 Burnley
A narrow home win would lift the Hornets clear of immediate danger and heap further pressure on Hayen, whose position is already under intense scrutiny. Both teams need the three points, but Vicarage Road may just prove the difference.
